Pilots who fly Westbury

Andre Odinius

Andre flies regularly at Westbury on his new Airwave Tatoo win. Andre is an experienced pilot and has been flying paragliders for some years and he is strongly focussed on XC flying.
 
 

Bertie Grotrian

Bertie is an experienced flier at Westbury, seen here flying his Gin Bandit DHV-2 paraglider. Bertie also flies a Java flexwing hang-glider with 'White Horse Marquees' advertised along the leading edge.
 
 

'Big Dave' McCarthy

Big Dave is often at the slope with his large Airwave Sport wing. Dave is a very experienced paraglider pilot and tandem instructor.
 
 

Brent Pullen CLUB COACH - PG

Brent flies an attractive red Vibe wing when he gets the time to fly. He is the Avon Club's Westbury Site Officer and a former Avon Club committee member and lives locally to the site.
 
 

Cathy Lawrence

Cathy is the Avon Club's Nova Magazine editor. She flies an Advance Epsilon wing paraglider in pretty red and yellow seen here at Westbury in mid October 2004. This year Cathy finishing her qualification on hang-gliders.
 

Chris Jones

Chris is an avid flier flying microlights, hang-gliders and paragliders. He flies an Advance Sigma wing in Red and Grey and is seen here in April 2004 turning in front of takeoff at Westbury.
 

Chris Rogers - CLUB COACH - PG

Chris has been flying for a few years and now flies a red DHV 1-2 Nova X-Act. He is seen here flying it in June 2004. Chris is also a CLUB COACH and will be happy to help or advise any low airtime paraglider pilots. See him on the hill.
 

Colin Hale

Colin flies at Westbury with his distinct Airwave Concept FR hang-glider. One of the few flexwings that have winglets. Colin is also an experienced sailplane pilot. He has recently upgraded his wing to a class-2 rigid wing hang-glider.
 

Colin Williamson

Colin is seen here flying his attractive yellow Vibe DHV 1-2 wing at Westbury on a thermic day in early summer 2004. Colin is an enthusiastic flier and is in the air when ever he can make it to Westbury.
 

David Glew

David is a regular visitor to Westbury and flies a red Gradient Golden DHV 1-2 wing.
 

'Farmer John' Young

John has been flying at Westbury for a few years and now flies a an orange/grey UP Makalu. John farms livestock and crop on his Wiltshire farm. Anyone who sees farmers as a problem regarding our sport should meet John and find out that some farmers are really nice guys!
 

Geoff Cannon

Geoff is one of Westbury's regular hang glider pilots. He flew his two-tone blue flexwing seen here departing the slope in August 2004. He has recently bought a Class 2 ATOS wing for those longer out-and-return days.
 

Helena Svensson

Helena is often seen at Westbury with partner Nick Farley and she is photographed here on her pretty mauve and red Ozone Atom DHV-1 wing on the north slope.
 

Ian Pepper

Ian is a 350 hour plus pilot and flies an attractive lemon-yellow Nova Carbon DHV 1-2 wing seen here on the north ridge in March 2004. He Recently returned from working and paragliding in warmer climates overseas and now lives in Wootton Bassett he can be seen regularly at Westbury.
 

Jeremy Thwaites

Jeremy flies at Westbury with his Nova Artax dhv 1-2 in red and black. He is seen here with new flight suit and harness. He also flies a class five hang-glider.

 

John Porter

John has been flying since the end of the 1990s and now flies a red Firebird 'AT' wing and a tandem wing. John is a sports physiotherapist.
 

John Rose

John Rose flies very often at Westbury and is usually seen higher up working thermals with patience. He flies a purple Gradient Onyx DHV 1-2 wing, seen here in September 2006.

 

Kevin Winter

Kevin has been flying hang-gliders and paragliders for many a year and has high hours. He is seen here flying his brand-new performance Wills Wing hang-glider on a very cold day - 29 February 2004.
 

Mike Coupe

Mike now flies his new Advance Sigma 6 DHV-2-3 comp wing and spends the summers flying XC, often competitively. In the winter months he usually flies at Westbury. In summer 2006 he flew an excellent 132km xc. Mike is a medical doctor.
 

Mike Holmes

Mike lives at Westbury and flies an Airwave Sport 2 in blue and white. This photo shows what can be done when a photo shoot goes right!
 

Mike Humphries

Mike flies Westbury regularly these days on an attractive grey and orange UP Makalu wing. He is seen here in August 2005 on the north slope.
 

Neil Atkinson

Neil is one of the highly experienced early hang-glider generation of pilots who now flies a high performance Class 5 Tsunami hang glider. He is seen here on a snowy February day in 2004. Neil is the Avon Club's HG Competitions organiser.
 

Neville Almond

Nev has been flying sailplanes and hang-gliders since the 1970s. He flies the latest high-performance Class 5 Atos VR wing and is a top cross-country pilot in the UK league. He also writes articles on free flying for Skywings..
 

Nick

Nick has been flying in the UK only recently after learning in New Zealand. He flies a yellow and black Nova Artax wing.
 

Nick Farley

Nick has moved to the area after working airside in the airline industry at Heathrow. He flies an Ozone Mojo paraglider which sports his company name - White Horse Landscapes.
 

Nick Romanco

Nick is an very experienced pilot and flies a top of the range Class 5 Ghostbuster hang glider. The high aspect ration wingform is clearly shown in this photograph of Nick just departing Westbury in 2004.
 

Paul

Paul has only just started paragliding although he has been para-motoring for some time and has a CPL licence. He is seen here flying his para-motoring wing at Westbury in September 2006.
 

Paul Warr

Paul has been flying paragliders since 2003 and currently flies a while and red Flying Planet wing. Paul is a lecturer in radio-freq engineering at Bristol University. He is seen here at Westbury's nearby Rifle Range site at Mere.

 

Peter

Peter is a newly qualified paraglider pilot and an ex-Army Air Corps fixed-wing Beaver pilot. He has a UP Makalu in gold and blue.

 

Phil Skinner

Phil flies paragliders at Westbury and flies a red Flying planet Spirit DHV 1-2 wing. Phil is an electronics engineer and my partner but doesn't get so much time to fly at Westbury.
 

Richard Danbury

Richard Danbury is a cross-country flier but often comes to fly Westbury. He is seen here on his Gradient Aspen DHV 2 wing in 2004.
 

Richard Anderson

Richard has been flying since 2003 and is a regular at Westbury. He flies a UP Makalu wing in yellow and blue.
 

Rod Taylor

Rod is a regular at Westbury and Mere and he is an enthusiastic pilot with XC interests. He is keen to comptete in the UK club challenge and has a Gradient Aspen DHV-2. He is shown here on his original DHV-1 wing.
 

Sarah Ward

I fly a red and yellow Ozone Vulcan DHV-2 wing. I love low-level jinking and thermal flying with the aim of making cloud-base. It's wonderful up there. The cross country that comes with making base is fun but I don't take the xc distance thing terribly seriously.
 

Simon & Liz Wood

Simon and Liz both fly paragliders. Simon has a passion for flying with a passenger on his Cosmic Rider tandem wing. They are long time Avon Club and Westbury pilots.
 

Simon Chippendale

Simon has been flying paragliders for at over ten years and flies a grey-red Ozone Vibe. Simon is an inventor and runs his own company. He is one of the main regulars at Westbury and will often be seen in the sky before anyone else on difficult days.
 

Stafford Evans

Stafford is an experienced pilot who flies a Gradient Aspen Two DHV-2 wing. Staff is likely to be spiralling up in a thermal ahead of the rest and heading out on XC. Staff also flies a blue and white tandem wing.

 

Steven

Steven flies a Sigma 6 DHV-2 wing and has recently started flying at Westbury hill.

 

Tim Pentreath

Tim is an experienced pilot and flies sites across the region but visits Westbury regularly. He was the Chairman for the Avon Club and is seen here on his Advance Sigma 5.He also flies a yellow Gradient Aspen DHV-2 and a white tandem wing.
 

Tony Moore CLUB COACH

Tony is seen here at Westbury in April 2004 flying a Nova X-Ray DHV-2 wing after a 4000foot climb. Tony is the Club's Low Airtime\Safety officer for hang-gliding. He also flies a class 2 hang-glider these days.
